Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County recently celebrated a major achievement during its Holiday Food & Fund Drive. They raised enough for over 8.6 million healthy meals, far exceeding their goal of 5.5 million meals. The celebration took place at the annual Awards Dinner at Hotel Paradox.
Local musician Ben James Yokel, known for playing at farmers’ markets and donating his tips to the Food Bank, provided live music for the evening. The theme, “Extraordinary Times Call for Extraordinary People,” highlighted the pressing needs of many local families. With federal food assistance cuts, a possible government shutdown, and rising economic troubles, more residents are relying on the Food Bank for help.
“Surpassing our goal isn’t just a milestone—it’s a triumph for those who depend on us and a testament to our community’s generosity,” said Erica Padilla-Chavez, the Food Bank’s CEO. She emphasized that each meal represents hope and dignity for families in need.
Co-chaired by Chris Murphy, president of the Santa Cruz Warriors, and Karl J. Rice, CEO of The Seaside Co., the campaign saw impressive community support. For instance, UC Santa Cruz and donor Tibi McCann partnered to raise the equivalent of over 1 million meals, with McCann matching contributions from local businesses. Twin Lakes Church also made substantial contributions, raising 1,071,121 meals.
During the dinner, the Food Bank honored key contributors like Loisrae Guin and America Sanchez, who were named Hunger Fighters of the Year. Awards were also given to Dean Sakae from WYSIWYG Farms as Food Donor of the Year, among others, recognizing those who significantly impacted the mission to combat hunger.
In line with future goals, Second Harvest unveiled its new strategic plan, which has a mission focused on “Nourishing Today, Building Tomorrow.” This plan aims to enhance access to healthy food, strengthen local partnerships, and address the root causes of hunger, especially as demand grows in uncertain times.
The Holiday Food & Fund Drive ran from November 6 to January 15, emphasizing community solidarity during critical times.
Big Creek Lumber Awards Scholarships
Big Creek Lumber has announced its McCrary Family Scholarship winners. This year, seven students from the Central Coast and surrounding areas were honored for their aspirations in skilled trades. The winners include Aiden Fay (Scotts Valley) studying Forestry and Fire Science, Brody Legions (Watsonville) in Landscape Architecture, and others focused on diesel mechanics and agriculture.
Founded in 2021 to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary, the scholarship pays tribute to the McCrary family’s longstanding commitment to sustainable forestry and skilled trades. It also aims to support future leaders in these fields, reflecting an urgent need for skilled workers.
The scholarship embodies the legacy of co-founders Bud and Lud McCrary, who advanced environmentally friendly practices, showcasing Big Creek Lumber’s dedication to both community and industry.
