HOUSTON, Texas — The holiday season is a busy time for those in need. The Houston Food Bank is reaching out for volunteers to help distribute meals during this critical period.
Every year, the demand for food assistance spikes, leading to long wait times for callers. This year, the Food Bank is particularly looking for Spanish speakers to assist as they roll out their holiday food box program.
Here’s what you need to know:
Volunteers will help register individuals by phone who want to receive food boxes. Shifts are open from December 1 to December 3, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Food Bank’s location. Even if you’ve never volunteered before, that’s not a problem. Before your shift, staff will provide a quick 15-minute training. You’ll also receive a binder with helpful information, plus staff will be there to answer any questions.
Food insecurity is a rising issue. According to a recent report, about 1 in 8 Americans faced hunger in 2021, with the pandemic intensifying the crisis. The Food Bank anticipates higher numbers this holiday due to ongoing economic challenges.
Volunteering can make a real difference. In 2022, the Houston Food Bank distributed over 140 million meals. Each call you take could help ensure a family enjoys a festive meal this holiday.
