Peanut Butter and Jelly Food Drive: A Community Call to Action

It’s that time of year again! September is Hunger Action Month, and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is gearing up for its annual Spread the Love Peanut Butter & Jelly food drive.

This event aims to tackle hunger in the 24 counties the food bank serves, including 14 in North Carolina and 10 in South Carolina. Within this region, Rowan County and its neighbors—like Cabarrus, Iredell, and Stanly—will receive special attention.

Second Harvest connects with various local organizations, helping to distribute food through programs that focus on child and senior hunger, including Backpack Programs. Last year alone, they provided over 3.1 million pounds of food to agencies in Rowan County. Across their entire service area, they distributed more than 88 million pounds of food!

Kay Carter, the CEO of Second Harvest, shared some eye-opening statistics: over 151,000 people in their service area face hunger, including about 57,000 seniors and many children. “This drive is crucial,” she emphasizes, noting that peanut butter is a nutritious, shelf-stable food that benefits both kids and seniors.

You can help in several ways. Consider hosting a food drive at your workplace, school, or community group. It’s a great way to get everyone involved. If fundraising is more your style, the food bank has set up a peer-to-peer platform, where every dollar donated buys about seven pounds of food.

Many local businesses and residents are already stepping up. Social media trends show a growing awareness of local hunger issues, with hashtags like #SpreadTheLove and #HungerActionMonth trending as people share their participation stories.

If you want to contribute, you can drop off donations at the main office in Charlotte or at branch locations in Rowan, Spartanburg, and Anderson. Alternatively, shopping from the food bank’s Amazon Wishlist allows you to have items sent directly to them.
