As Hunger Action Month kicks off, the Mahoning County Junior Fair is stepping up to help those in need. At the Canfield Fairgrounds, fair members are collecting non-perishable food and funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley.
The fair includes seven local youth organizations, such as 4-H, Future Farmers of America, and the Girl Scouts. Their efforts are part of a “stock the trailer” initiative aimed at supporting community members facing food insecurity.
This campaign isn’t just local; it’s part of a larger statewide competition organized by Farm Credit Mid-America. Many communities across Ohio are joining in to gather supplies for their neighbors in need.
Fairgoers are invited to donate food, supplies, or cash at a designated trailer set up at the fairgrounds. All contributions will directly support the Second Harvest Food Bank. Grace Maltonic, president of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, emphasizes the importance of community involvement: “When the community comes out to support us, it is a huge help for all of us in the community.”
In the last two years, this initiative has already collected over 10,000 pounds of food. It’s a testament to what local organizations can accomplish when they come together for a common cause.
Food insecurity affects millions. According to Feeding America, one in nine Americans faces hunger. Initiatives like this remind us that local efforts can make a significant impact. By supporting food banks, we help ensure that no one in our community has to struggle for their next meal.
For those looking to contribute, every little bit helps. Whether it’s a can of food or a small donation, your support can change lives.
