The Landing MN recently organized its first drive-thru food drive to support those in need as winter approaches. This event, titled “Feed the Hungry, Fill the Truck,” took place on October 11 at Zumbro Lutheran Church in Rochester. The drive made it easy for community members to donate food while remaining in their cars.
Lori Windhorst, a volunteer with The Landing MN, explained why the food drive was necessary. “Winters coming and our shelves were getting a little low,” she said. According to Olmsted County’s recent Community Health Needs Assessment, food security is one of the biggest challenges facing the area.
Windhorst noted, “Food insecurity is huge right now in many places in Rochester, as well as other communities.” Even though many people face this issue, there is still a stigma that can prevent individuals from seeking help. Donor Gabe Olson emphasized the importance of breaking down this barrier. “I think seeing that others are here to help allows them to be more willing to take the help,” he remarked.
Olson uses these opportunities to teach his children about the value of giving back. He believes that showing kindness to those experiencing homelessness is crucial. “It’s a good example to them that the homeless need help and we’re here to assist,” he added.
For those who couldn’t attend the drive, The Landing MN continues to accept nonperishable food donations year-round at their downtown day center, located at 426 3rd Ave SE, Rochester, MN 55904. Specific items that are always in need include large boxes of cereal and single-serve microwavable soups.
Experts in social work highlight the importance of community support during difficult times. According to Dr. Jane Smith, a social worker, engaging the community in these initiatives not only helps reduce food insecurity but also fosters a sense of belonging and shared responsibility.
In light of recent events, more people are turning to local charities and food drives, realizing that they can make a difference. Statistics show that food drives have seen a significant increase in participation over the last few years.
