Join the Maine Marathon: Support Fishermen’s Health by Donating Today!

Twenty runners are gearing up for the Maine Marathon on October 5 to support wellness programs for fishermen. This dedicated team is raising funds for the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association Fishermen Wellness Program. This program is vital for the mental and physical health of commercial fishermen.

The Fishermen Wellness Program does important work. It provides mental health first aid workshops in fishing communities and trains healthcare professionals to better understand the needs of fishermen. They also offer free counseling, physical therapy sessions, and discounts on recovery supplies.

Monique Coombs, the MCFA’s director of community programs, expressed gratitude for the runners. She said, “We’re so grateful for every runner who laces up for Maine’s fishing families.” Coombs emphasized that the program helps fishermen access needed support, both for their mental health and physical recovery. “This kind of community support is priceless,” she added.

This marks the fifth year that the Brunswick-based MCFA has organized a marathon team. This year, they aim to raise $10,000 for the wellness initiative. Team member Evan Gleason highlighted the importance of the MCFA’s approach. He noted that while many view fishermen as a unified group, there are differing opinions and economic realities within the community. “MCFA has a seat at the table for everybody, and that’s amazing,” he said.

Recent statistics reveal that mental health issues are prevalent in the fishing industry, with one study showing that fishermen have a higher risk of anxiety and depression compared to workers in other sectors. The need for programs like this has never been more critical.

The MCFA team is accepting donations through their online giving page. This effort not only raises funds but also raises awareness about the challenges faced by those in the fishing community.

In a world where community support is essential, these runners are showing that the well-being of fishermen matters to everyone.
