In Gladstone, the Michigan State Police are gearing up for their 16th annual “Stuff a Blue Goose” toy and food drive. This event aims to collect new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food for families in need. It will be held on Saturday, December 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Elmer’s County Market and Walmart in Escanaba. All donations go to the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots programs.
The initiative started back in 2009, when a trooper from the former White Pigeon Post recognized the increasing demand for support in his community. That first year, four police posts worked together and managed to fill 10 patrol cars with donations. The nickname “Blue Goose” comes from what officers call their patrol vehicles.
Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, expressed pride in the tradition, stating, “With tremendous community support, we are able to help make a difference. Our hope is that the toys and food collected make the holiday season brighter for everyone.” Last year, the drive gathered over 12,000 toys, 4,000 pounds of food, and $50,000 to assist local families.
Other Upper Peninsula posts are also contributing to the drive. For instance, the Calumet Post will be collecting items at Pat’s Foods stores today from 1-4 p.m., and a variety of food bags will be available for purchase. The Iron Mountain Post will be at Walmart from 2 to 5 p.m. for Toys for Tots donations, while other locations are set up in Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace until Monday.
This collaborative effort highlights how local communities come together to support those in need during the holidays. It reflects a growing trend of grassroots charity initiatives where people are eager to help one another. Participating in such drives not only spreads holiday cheer but also fosters a sense of unity and giving in the community.
