The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has introduced a new program called the Community Climate Champion initiative. Each month, this initiative will honor one resident or local community group for their efforts to protect the environment.
Residents can nominate themselves or others who have made a positive impact through actions like innovative recycling, reducing waste, promoting biodiversity, saving energy, or encouraging sustainable practices.
The criteria for recognition include the long-term effects on the environment, creativity, and the ability to inspire others. Each month, a new Community Climate Champion will be celebrated, culminating in an annual awards event in October to coincide with Climate Action Day.
According to Councillor John McClaughry, Chair of the Council, this initiative aims to spotlight individuals who work hard, often on a volunteer basis, to protect the environment and enhance the community. He noted, “Every effort, big or small, makes a difference in the fight against climate change and helps preserve our beautiful landscapes for future generations.”
The Fermanagh and Omagh area boasts a stunning natural landscape, and managing it sustainably is crucial. The Council aims to achieve a Net Zero District by 2042 as outlined in its Climate Change and Sustainable Development Action Plan. The Community Climate Champion initiative reflects this commitment to environmental priorities.
Nominations can be made online and must be submitted by the third Sunday of each month. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Climate Team at climate@fermanaghomagh.com or call 0300 303 1777.
