Local Rally and Food Drive in Ashland
On Saturday, July 26, a rally and food drive are happening in Ashland from 10 a.m. to noon at Ashland Plaza. This event is organized by Oregon District 2 Indivisible, a grassroots group. They’re responding to a recent federal tax and spending bill signed into law by President Trump.
The new legislation represents the largest tax cut in U.S. history, as stated by the Ways and Means Committee. However, it also makes significant cuts to Medicaid, a program that helps vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities. In Oregon alone, around 1.4 million people rely on the Oregon Health Plan for medical care.
The changes in eligibility for Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) mean that many families may struggle to access food and healthcare. The rally’s theme is “families first,” reflecting concerns over the impact of the bill on everyday people.
Organizers aim to highlight what they see as a harmful shift in priorities—favoring tax cuts for the wealthy over essential services for families. Non-perishable food donations collected during the event will go to the local food bank, supporting those in need in the community.
This protest also critiques Congressman Cliff Bentz, who voted in support of the tax bill. His district covers parts of Southern and Eastern Oregon, including Jackson County.
Recent surveys show that many Americans are worried about the impact of such legislation on social programs. A study indicated that nearly 70% believe healthcare should be a right, not a privilege.
