The People Planet and Peace Foundation organized a rally in Lagos on May 24, 2026, to raise awareness about climate change. This event marked the conclusion of Nigeria’s part in the Climate Beyond Borders Caravan (CBBC). Mr. Olatunji Francisco, who leads the initiative in Africa, explained that the caravan started in Abuja and included stops in Ibadan and Abeokuta before arriving in Lagos.
The CBBC spans 21 African nations, focusing on environmental sustainability and promoting climate awareness. This initiative encourages teamwork across countries, showcasing just how important collaboration is in fighting climate issues.
During the rally, Mr. Everest Ikechukwu, a participant, emphasized the need for stakeholders to shift towards renewable energy instead of relying on non-renewable sources. This advice aligns with recent studies suggesting that renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, could meet over 80% of global energy needs by 2050, reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly.
Miss Olabisi Kumuyi, the Caravan Secretary for Nigeria, also highlighted the role of art in activism. She praised Mr. Emmanuel Olaore, known as Sisco Lee, for his song “Planting Trees Toward Climate Change Adaptation,” which resonates with many young people. This shows how music can inspire action, making climate change a relatable issue.
There was plenty of entertainment, too. Mr. Duncan Seda from Kenya wowed the audience with his dance performance at the Teslim Balogun Stadium. Events like this not only entertain but also engage communities, drawing attention to critical issues through interactive experiences.
Support and logistics for the event were provided by Mr. Olumide Idowu from the International Climate Change Development Initiative in Africa, ensuring everything ran smoothly. This rally was more than just a gathering; it was a celebration of commitment to climate action and a call for change.
