The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) is stepping up its efforts to combat noise pollution with the 11th Annual Noiseless Lagos Campaign. This year’s event took place on May 12, 2026, and focused on “Advancing Sound Control and Technology in an Emerging Smart City.”
The campaign aims to create better strategies to reduce noise in areas like religious centers, which are often problematic. Princess Oyekan Ismaila, from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, encouraged everyone to take more responsibility for their noise levels, particularly in shared spaces. She highlighted, “Our health and environment are essential for Lagos’s growth.”
Dr. Gaji Tajudeen, from the Office of Environmental Services, warned that noise pollution is not just annoying; it poses significant health risks. He stated, “Living in a noisy environment can lead to serious health consequences.”
Experts are now advocating for technology as a solution. Mr. Adeyinka Sorongbe noted that tools like real-time monitoring and AI could help manage noise pollution effectively. He stressed that improving sound control is vital for public health and overall well-being.
Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, LASEPA’s General Manager, reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing noise regulations. He emphasized that everyone—religious organizations, schools, and businesses—must keep their noise within acceptable limits.
Community leaders also voiced their concerns. Rev. Dr. Dele Ajayi urged worshippers to be considerate, while Imam Badmus Suleiman called for responsible noise management in schools and religious settings.
An engaging debate on “Technology and Noise: Who Bears the Responsibility?” showcased the thoughts of students from six education districts. The winner, Master Modele David Olufemi, garnered attention for his well-researched arguments. Participants also received free hearing tests to highlight the practical impacts of noise pollution.
With recent surveys indicating that nearly 60% of city residents feel disturbed by noise, these conversations are crucial. By incorporating innovative solutions and community cooperation, Lagos aims to transform into a healthier, quieter city.
