Stocking local food pantries can be tough, especially when unexpected challenges arise. Recently, North Shore communities faced a unique situation: figuring out where to store an overflow of food donations amid a federal government shutdown that affected SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.
During this time, from early October to mid-November, many locals turned to food pantries for support. Township representatives from New Trier, Moraine, and Niles expressed gratitude for the community’s overwhelming generosity. New Trier Township supervisor Gail Eisenberg noted, “Every space in our building got filled with food donations.”
The government shutdown impacted more than 41 million people nationwide who depend on SNAP for grocery support. In New Trier, over 1,000 residents benefit from this program. However, as families faced delays in receiving their SNAP benefits, pantry usage soared. New Trier’s pantry saw registrations rise by 21% from March to November, now serving about 280 families.
Niles Township reported more than 200 people visiting their food pantry daily, marking a staggering 67% increase during the shutdown. Across the region, the Northern Illinois Food Bank found visits to food pantries grew by 8%, roughly translating to 22,000 more families seeking assistance.
Community members stepped up by organizing food drives and contributing countless hours volunteering. Areas collaborated to set up additional drop-off points, making it easier for donors to help.
Even as SNAP benefits resumed on November 20, there’s ongoing concern about sustaining pantry stocks. As Eisenberg explained, SNAP only covers about $6 per day for food, leaving many household needs unmet, such as hygiene items. The increased demand on food pantries suggests a continuing need for support from the community.
