The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is reaching out to non-profit organizations to join an important initiative. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) aims to provide meals to children who may not have enough to eat during the summer and in times of public emergencies. This program is crucial for kids who rely on free or reduced-price meals when school is in session.
There are two main types of feeding models in the program. Congregate feeding sites serve meals in a group setting, where children can gather and eat together. On the other hand, rural non-congregate feeding sites deliver meals to areas where transportation is difficult, ensuring that all children have access to nutritious food. This year, DHSS is focusing on increasing the number of rural feeding sites to better serve underserved communities.
Eligible organizations to become sponsors include schools, faith-based groups, camps, non-profits, and local government entities. To qualify as a feeding site, an organization must be located in an area where at least half of the children qualify for free or reduced meals.
The SFSP is funded by the federal government and managed by DHSS. New non-profit organizations can apply from March 1 until May 15. Those interested in providing meals to children are encouraged to get involved. The department also offers training to help organizations meet program requirements.
