New Delhi, June 8: This Sunday, 1,000 cyclists and fitness buffs gathered at JLN Stadium for the 26th Fit India Sunday on Cycle event. Partnered with Indian Railways, the event was lively and filled with energy. Special guests included actress Madhurima Tuli, wrestler Anirudh Kumar, and mountaineer Narender Kumar.
Madhurima was honored as a Fit India Icon by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. A former state-level athlete, she expressed her passion for cycling. “It’s more than a hobby for me,” she said. “Cycling helps fight obesity and keeps you healthy.”
This edition brought broader participation with railway officials and sports figures taking part. The initiative connected over 2,600 cycling clubs and various sports centers across the country, from Alwar to Tinsukia. Fitness activities like Zumba and yoga were also part of the fun, coordinated by groups like My Bharat and the Rope Skipping Federation.
Wrestler Anirudh Kumar, who recently won gold at the 2024 U23 Asian Championships, highlighted the importance of cycling for youth fitness. “It builds stamina and reduces fat. It’s inspiring to see so many young people active today,” he shared.
Mountaineer Narender Kumar, preparing for an expedition to Mount Elbrus, praised the movement as a positive national force. “The Prime Minister’s message has resonated deeply across India. It’s heartwarming to see young people choosing fitness over distractions,” he said.
Since its launch in December 2024, the Fit India Sundays initiative has reached over 350,000 participants in 10,000+ locations. Starting with just about 150 cyclists, the program has grown significantly, thanks in part to collaboration with the CISF, Armed Forces, and various professional groups.
Experts emphasize that regular physical activity is essential for overall well-being. A recent survey showed that nearly 70% of respondents acknowledged the link between fitness and mental health. With initiatives like this, there’s hope that more people will embrace healthy lifestyles.
As more participants join the movement, it’s clear that cycling isn’t just a leisurely activity but a way to cultivate healthier communities across the nation.
