Dr. Bala Inusa, a Senior Technical Adviser to Nigeria’s President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recently called for increased action from Nigerians to meet climate targets by 2030. He spoke at the Nigeria SDG Awards and Symposium, an event organized by the African Cleanup Initiative and the United Nations Information Centre, focusing on enhancing awareness about the SDGs.
The theme of the symposium, “Scaling Up Actions: Accelerating Nigeria’s Journey Towards the 2030 Agenda,” highlighted the importance of collective effort in reaching these goals. Dr. Inusa emphasized that achieving climate action goals requires everyone’s involvement, including the government, private sector, and civil society.
Award recipients like Mrs. Ibironke Olubamise, a Global Environment Specialist with the UNDP, expressed their gratitude for the recognition. She encouraged citizens to excellence in their work, noting that their efforts could have a ripple effect on broader environmental issues. Olubamise pointed out that without addressing environmental challenges, the consequences could impact everyone.
Mr. Iduh Otene, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Positive Environmental Impact and Reforestation, believed the award would encourage deeper commitment to climate action. He expressed a desire to engage more citizens at the grassroots level and stressed the need for knowledge sharing to tackle climate change effectively.
Ezegwoya Joseph from APEARE also shared his appreciation for the recognition, suggesting it would fuel further efforts toward the SDGs. He urged Nigerians to contribute to achieving these important goals before the 2030 deadline.
Recent data shows that achieving climate-related targets is crucial, as the global climate crisis worsens. According to a 2022 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, climate change could displace over 200 million people by 2050 if no action is taken. This serves as a stark reminder of the urgency behind these discussions.
