Join the Movement: Support University of Hawaiʻi Students This Giving Tuesday!

The University of Hawaiʻi’s annual Giving Tuesday happens on December 2. This special day encourages the community to support students across all 10 campuses.

Many students face significant challenges, such as food insecurity and high housing costs. Tim Dolan, CEO of the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation, noted, “Students face real challenges right now, including basic needs like food and housing. Giving Tuesday is about coming together as a community, where every gift can make a difference.”

Hawaiʻi Community College freshman Blake Pena-Perez shared his struggles. Rising costs made it tough for him to afford meals. He said, “There were days I didn’t know what I’d eat. That kind of stress takes over your whole life.” Thanks to scholarships, he managed to cover not just tuition but also necessities like food and car maintenance.

These issues aren’t unique to Blake. Many students deal with similar pressures, which can derail their academic goals. Giving Tuesday aims to highlight these realities and invites alumni and community members to lend a helping hand.

Last year, numerous donors supported emergency financial aid, food assistance, and scholarships. Their generosity helped many students stay in school and focused on their studies. This year, the goal is to expand that reach.

“Every dollar counts,” Dolan emphasized. “When you give, you’re not just helping a student; you’re investing in Hawaiʻi’s future.” Graduates often go on to strengthen communities and contribute to the islands’ well-being.

In recent surveys, 60% of college students reported food insecurity. This statistic underscores the need for support during tough times. Providing a bit of help can make all the difference.

As you consider your own contributions, remember that your support helps students stay on track. A gift on December 2 not only provides immediate assistance but also shows students they are valued and supported.
