Taiwan’s Climate March: A Call for Action

On November 1, a powerful event is set to take place in Taipei. Ten environmental organizations will host the “March for Climate — Building a Resilient Taiwan.” This gathering aims to raise awareness about the ongoing climate crisis and encourage action.

The march will start and end at Taipei Civic Plaza. Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy speeches, music, street performances, and a marketplace focused on sustainability.

This event is perfectly timed before the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which runs from November 10 to 21. Organizers want to shine a light on Taiwan’s environmental challenges, especially in a world dealing with severe climate disruption.

Climate change impacts more than just the environment. It touches everything from community well-being to workers’ rights. Notably, this year’s march will unite diverse groups, including labor unions, Indigenous organizations, and youth alliances, showcasing the broader effect of climate issues on society.

Recent studies have shown that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. A survey by the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network found that nearly 70% of respondents in Taiwan feel climate change is affecting their daily lives. This rising concern highlights the urgency of the situation.

The coalition of organizations will present 11 calls to action aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s climate response:

1. Uphold the commitment to phase out nuclear energy and toughen decarbonization goals.
2. Implement fair land-use planning for better access to green energy.
3. Use local knowledge to protect ecosystems and biodiversity.
4. Ensure the voices of children and youth are heard in climate decisions.
5. Enforce principles that hold polluters accountable.
6. Decrease reliance on imported energy for enhanced national security.
7. Mobilize all sectors to adapt to climate impacts.
8. Create systems for a fair transition that supports communities.
9. Encourage democratic involvement in renewable energy projects.
10. Defend the land rights of Indigenous peoples.
11. Reject actions that amplify the climate crisis and stand against oppressive regimes.

Participating organizations include the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance, Greenpeace Taiwan, and Amnesty International Taiwan. Their collaboration highlights a shared commitment to a sustainable future for all.

The upcoming march is not just about raising awareness; it’s a reminder that collective action can lead to significant change. As we move closer to global discussions on climate, the need for resilient strategies is clearer than ever.
