Lucknow’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, emphasized that caring for the environment is a collective responsibility we all share. During a recent meeting about environmental initiatives, he set the ambitious goal of increasing Uttar Pradesh’s green cover to 20% by 2030. He stressed that this can only happen if tree planting becomes a movement led by the people.

A major tree plantation drive is planned from July 1 to 7, aiming to plant 35 crore saplings by 2025. To prepare for this, the CM instructed officials to ensure at least 50 crore saplings are ready in nurseries. He noted the importance of planting diverse species, including fruit-bearing and medicinal trees, to boost biodiversity.

Yogi also introduced a ‘River Rejuvenation Campaign’ to revitalize major rivers in the state. This will include planting trees along riverbanks and vacant lands near expressways. He pointed out the increasing silt in rivers from Nepal and suggested studying river channelization for better water flow. Engaging reputable institutions like IIMs will help analyze the campaign’s broader effects.

Every district in Uttar Pradesh has unique biodiversity, and Yogi urged for a ‘biodiversity register’ that documents local flora and fauna. He suggested organizing ‘Green Chaupals’ in villages to promote eco-friendly practices and sustainable farming. Each village should aim to establish a ‘village forest’ to foster local forestry initiatives.

Addressing the sensitive issue of human-wildlife conflict, he called for solar fencing in districts known for such challenges. He also asked for the quick filling of vacant posts in forest services to ensure effective management.

In his review of the Kukrail Night Safari project, Yogi advocated for a swift contractor selection process. He expressed support for a proposed university focused on forestry and horticulture, emphasizing that its infrastructure should reflect these themes.

It’s noteworthy that Uttar Pradesh is home to 2,397 Gangetic dolphins, nearly 38% of the total population in India, highlighting the state’s rich aquatic biodiversity.

Recent surveys show growing public support for environmental initiatives, with a notable rise in community participation across various green drives. As society becomes more eco-conscious, the role of social media in rallying support for local tree-planting events is undeniable. Platforms are buzzing with enthusiasm, encouraging more citizens to join environmental movements.
