Women in Oil and Gas (WEOG) is emphasizing the need for awareness and action on climate change as we approach the 2025 World Decarbonisation Day. This call came during a recent webinar held in Lagos, where leaders discussed this important topic.

WEOG aims to boost gender diversity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The organization wishes to create opportunities for women to take on leadership roles and align their goals with sustainable development. The group’s national president, Mrs. Tolu Longe, stressed that climate change is not just a technical issue; it’s a global challenge that affects everyone.

Longe urged for a truthful narrative about climate change. She believes that the media can play a crucial role in sharing stories that matter. During the webinar, she highlighted that climate communication is essential for raising public awareness, changing behaviors, and influencing local and global policies.

Mrs. Toyin Alozie, chairperson of the WEOG Future Energy Renewable and Climate Action Committee, emphasized that they are ready to lead Nigeria’s decarbonisation efforts. She noted that sustainable energy access and climate action are essential goals. Alozie underscored the importance of including holistic narratives around fossil fuels and nature-based solutions, as some communities may find renewable energy options too costly.

Another speaker, Mrs. Toyin Yusuff, chairperson for World Decarbonisation Day 2025, called for a balanced portrayal of fossil fuels. She reminded everyone that Nigeria can embrace local technologies and attract green investments without completely demonizing fossil fuels.

Environmental activist Mr. Desmond Majekodunmi stressed the shared responsibility of addressing climate action. He pointed out the significant role journalists play in discussing climate issues and the urgency of the situation we face. According to a recent UN report, climate change could displace 1.2 billion people by 2050 if necessary actions aren’t taken soon.

Mr. Olumide Idowu, a climate change advocate, also highlighted the media’s responsibility in promoting climate action. He noted that the media acts as a bridge between innovation and practical solutions.

As a part of the global initiative, WEOG declared September 3 as World Decarbonisation Day in 2024. This event aims to unite over 3,000 stakeholders to shine a spotlight on Africa’s role in sustainable development.
