Join the NVFC: Volunteer Firefighters Needed for Impactful Mental Health Video Campaign

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is creating a series of testimonial videos that shed light on the mental health struggles faced by volunteer firefighters. The aim is to raise awareness and inspire departments to prioritize emotional wellness.

The NVFC is seeking stories from volunteer firefighters in a few specific areas:

  • Those who have faced mental health challenges related to their service, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or burnout.
  • Those who have lost a colleague to mental health issues.
  • Those who have worked to enact positive change in their departments regarding mental health support.

Participants will share their journeys and the resources they found helpful, including counseling, peer support, or the NVFC’s Share The Load Program and First Responder Helpline.

After submissions close on March 12, selected individuals will have brief interviews via Zoom. Chosen stories will be filmed in early April at a location decided together, with travel costs covered by NVFC.

This initiative is part of a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in first responders. According to a recent study, nearly 30% of firefighters report symptoms of PTSD, and many experience high levels of stress. Mental health awareness is crucial as these professionals often face traumatic situations that can linger long after the flames are out.

Engagement on social media shows a supportive community, with hashtags like #FirefighterWellness trending. Many share their stories, reinforcing the importance of discussing mental health openly.

With increasing conversations around mental health, initiatives like these can foster a culture of support. They remind us that wellness is just as vital as physical safety in firefighting.
