SALUDA— On April 28 at 10 a.m., the Saluda Garden Club will host an important talk at the Saluda Library about climate trends in Western North Carolina. The featured speaker is Emma Scott from the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies.

Emma will delve into her work with the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and how it relates to local weather patterns. Her presentation is particularly timely. The past year brought intense weather events, including Hurricane Helene, severe winter conditions, and strong winds that contributed to wildfires in Polk County and beyond.

Recent data from NCEI reveals that the average U.S. temperature for the first eight months of 2024 was 56.9 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a concerning 3.0 degrees higher than the 20th-century average, making it the second warmest year on record to date.
