As requests for food, shelter, and economic help rise in North Texas, the Salvation Army has kicked off its annual Angel Tree program. This initiative allows community members to adopt an “Angel” — a child, senior, or adult with special needs — either online or in person until December 6.
This program is part of the Salvation Army’s broader Give With Joy holiday campaign, which includes the well-known Red Kettle fundraising drive. According to Christina Cavalier, managing director of the Salvation Army of North Texas, the demand for assistance is higher than usual this year. Many families are struggling and must choose between gifts and essential bills, making the Angel Tree program crucial.
Insights from recent reports show that more families are feeling the squeeze from budget constraints, partly due to the ongoing federal government shutdown that has threatened various assistance programs. In Texas alone, requests for aid have surged, with many turning to the Salvation Army’s 12 food pantries and four shelters for support.
Cavalier mentioned that they are assessing whether any locations need extended hours to accommodate the increased demand. “We’re seeing a significant rise in requests,” she said. “Angel Tree helps ease that burden for families during the holiday season.”
Since November 3, people can adopt Angels and donate gifts at designated drop-off points, including drive-thru sites throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Additionally, those who want to get involved can volunteer to ring bells for the Red Kettle campaign, which starts the day after Thanksgiving.
“Getting involved is easy,” Cavalier added. “You can adopt an Angel, ring bells, or donate. Choose what suits you best.”
