Join the Team: GCU Welcomes McCabe as New Coach – Exciting Developments in Grand Canyon University Athletics

Once Bryce Drew, the head coach at Grand Canyon University (GCU), offered Jordan McCabe a chance to join the Lopes basketball team as an assistant coach, McCabe eagerly accepted. Four years ago, he had passed on GCU for a transfer to UNLV. Now, at 26, he was ready for this new chapter after spending two years coaching.

“Jordan is a hard worker with a great reputation,” Drew said. “He was a good player and has shown he can coach well.”

The opportunity arose in May. McCabe was preparing for his wedding to his college sweetheart, Olivia, when he reached out to Drew about the position. Drew wisely advised him to focus on his wedding first.

“I admire his priorities,” McCabe noted. He is drawn to Drew’s strong moral foundation and competitive spirit, which align with his own values.

Before landing at GCU, McCabe played under Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins at West Virginia and later at UNLV, where he started every game in the 2021-22 season. He averaged 4.4 assists that year, maintaining a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Back in high school, McCabe was a standout ball-handler. He gained fame after being named Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin in 2018, beating out well-known players like Tyrese Haliburton. His impressive skills led to appearances on shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show and numerous social media endorsements.

Despite his past popularity on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, McCabe has since stepped back from social media to focus on his coaching career. “I don’t have those apps on my phone anymore,” he shared, showing his commitment to his new role.

After a challenging first year in coaching, he followed a mentor to Wisconsin-Green Bay but quickly found himself at GCU, where he could learn from a seasoned staff. “This was a no-brainer,” McCabe remarked, emphasizing how all his boxes were checked with this new job.

With a fresh perspective, McCabe looks forward to building relationships within the program. He aims to create strong bonds between players and coaches while honing his skills in offensive and defensive strategies.

“I want to soak up everything I can,” he said. “One day, I hope to be a head coach.” For now, he’s thrilled to be part of a talented coaching team under Drew at GCU.

As college basketball continues to evolve, McCabe’s energy and dedication will undoubtedly contribute positively to the Lopes. According to a recent survey, over 80% of players value supportive coaches who emphasize relationships and communication—qualities McCabe aims to embody.
