The Mexican reggae band Antidoping recently described their performance at the Bob Marley 80th birthday tribute in Jamaica as “super privileged.” This was their first time in Jamaica, where they mixed reggae with their Latin roots.
Band members Pedro and Manuel have loved Bob Marley’s music since they discovered it in 1990. Bob Marley is the heart of reggae for them—a true icon, not just in Mexico but worldwide. “He represents everything. That’s why it is so important for us to be here representing for Mexico,” said band member Pepe.
Antidoping and another South American band, Non Palidece from Argentina, rocked the stage during the Reggae Month concert. Organized by the Ministry of Culture and the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, this year’s event drew one of the largest crowds ever and even featured fireworks.
Opening the show was Bongo Herman, a regular at Marley events, followed by Aza Lineage. Aza’s performance was heartfelt, as she wore white in honor of those born in February. Mexican reggae singer Jah Fabio also returned to impress the crowd, before both bands took the stage.
Rastafarian singer Warrior King continued the vibe, paying tribute to Marley with “So Much Things To Say” and sharing his own hits, like “Never Go Where Pagans Go.” The audience loved when he brought his wife on stage and serenaded her, then sang “Virtuous Woman.”
Bushman, another talented artist from St. Thomas, came to share a message through his music. He urged radio stations to play more regulated music and suggested serious fines for those that don’t. “When I grew up, I tried to emulate Bob with my guitar and sardine pan. It’s time to rebel,” he said, emphasizing the power of music in shaping minds. His performance included Bob Marley’s “Ambush in the Night” and his popular song “Lighthouse,” which got the crowd moving.
Julian Marley closed out the show with high energy, performing hits from his father’s legacy. His lively performance had fans commenting on how much he resembled Bob in his movement and sound. He even invited his brother Stephen and nephew Skip Marley to join him, along with dancehall stars Bugle and Bounty Killer, adding even more excitement to the celebration.
This year’s tribute to Bob Marley took place under the theme ‘Uprising,’ marking what would have been his 80th birthday.
