OCONOMOWOC, Wis. – The community came together this past Saturday to support the Oconomowoc Food Pantry during the fourth annual VFW National Day of Service.

VFW Post 2260 organized the “Fill the Humvee” event, encouraging locals to donate non-perishable food items. All contributions directly benefited the food pantry, helping to address food insecurity in the area.
Garret Collins, the Post commander, pointed out that many view Oconomowoc as affluent, but there are families in need. “There’s a mixed population here, and it’s crucial to uplift those who are struggling,” he said.
The Humvee was parked at the VFW Post on Wisconsin Avenue, drawing attention to the cause. Organizers also accepted cash donations and had volunteers at three local grocery stores to facilitate even more support.
If you missed the event, donations can still be made year-round. Yellow barrels at grocery stores are available for anyone wishing to contribute to the food pantry.
On a larger scale, the “Fill the Humvee” event was part of a nationwide initiative with 1,500 VFW Day of Service events happening across the country—this is three times more than last year, reflecting a growing commitment to community support.
For context, food insecurity affects millions in the U.S., with reports indicating that around 10% of households face challenges in securing enough food—this includes unexpected hardships due to economic fluctuations, natural disasters, or health crises. Efforts like the one in Oconomowoc are vital in combating this issue and providing relief to those in need.
As community efforts like these multiply, they highlight the importance of local initiatives in addressing larger social challenges. Engaging in programs not only helps families in need but also strengthens community bonds.
