Join the World Affairs Council: Dr. Sara Newland Explores Taiwan’s Political Landscape

Springfield – The World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts is hosting Dr. Sara Newland from Smith College on Tuesday, February 11. She will discuss “Democracy In The Shadow Of Great-Power Competition: The Politics Of Taiwan.” The event starts at noon and will be held at 1350 Main Street in downtown Springfield.

Dr. Newland specializes in local politics in China and Taiwan. She focuses on how local officials serve their communities and engage in international relations. Her research, featured in publications like China Quarterly and Governance, explores local governance and public services. She is currently studying how state and local officials influence U.S., China, and Taiwan relations, particularly in her work on subnational diplomacy. She is also co-authoring a book about U.S.-China subnational diplomacy amid growing competition between these nations.

For attendees, tickets are priced at $5 for World Affairs Council members without lunch, $20 for members with lunch, $10 for nonmembers without lunch, and $25 for nonmembers with lunch.
