Join the World’s Largest Climate Adaptation Event in Christchurch: Be Part of the Change!

Otautahi Christchurch is gearing up to host the Adaptation Futures Conference (AF2025) from October 13 to 16. This major event will bring together over 1,200 leaders, scientists, and policymakers from more than 90 countries. They will dive deep into tackling the pressing challenges of climate change.

This year, the focus will be on Pacific and indigenous leadership. There will be more than 200 sessions, masterclasses, and even creative arts events. John Higgins, the Council General Manager of Strategy, Planning, and Regulatory, expressed pride in Christchurch for hosting such a vital gathering. He noted that the city’s own journey of recovery after the 2011 earthquake makes it an ideal place for discussions on adaptation and resilience.

Experts believe that collaboration is key when facing climate issues. Higgins mentioned that the conference would help spark new partnerships and ideas to ensure communities can thrive in a changing climate.

In addition to the conference, Christchurch Conversations will host a free speaker event next Wednesday at The Piano, featuring local and international speakers. Former MP and mayor Lianne Dalziel will chair a panel discussion.

Attendees will also experience hands-on initiatives from the city, such as the Coastal Hazards Viewer and SmartView Emissions Tracker. Delegates can explore local successes in environmental management, including field trips to the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and strategies for coastal adaptation in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour.

Recent studies show that countries worldwide are increasingly prioritizing climate adaptation. A report by the Global Center on Adaptation highlights that over 70% of nations recognize the need for action but struggle with funding and implementation. Events like AF2025 play a crucial role in fostering international dialogue and sharing innovative solutions.

This convergence of minds in Christchurch marks an important step in addressing climate challenges head-on. The combined insights from various experts could pave the way for impactful actions.
