During Catholic Schools Week, students across the United States came together to pray the World Mission Rosary. This special event took place on January 28 and connected children via Zoom from various Catholic schools in the Midwest.
Catholic Schools Week is a time to celebrate the value of Catholic education. It occurs every year, starting on the last Sunday of January and continuing for a full week. This year, the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA), part of the Pontifical Mission Societies, organized the rosary prayer. Students from 77 elementary schools across 14 dioceses took part.
The dioceses involved included places like Milwaukee, Columbus, Des Moines, and others. The Pontifical Mission Societies USA consist of various branches, including the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and the Missionary Union, helping to educate and support schools throughout the country.
The online rosary gave children a chance to think about their peers around the world who lack access to education. Each decade of the World Mission Rosary represents a different global region where missionaries share the Gospel. The colors symbolize various parts of the world: green for Africa, blue for the Pacific Islands, white for Europe, red for the Americas, and yellow for Asia.
This World Mission Rosary was created in 1951 by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, who wanted to inspire people to pray for the mission of the Church.
During the event, Monsignor Roger J. Landry, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies USA, emphasized the importance of reflecting on both the blessings students enjoy and the challenges facing many children worldwide who cannot attend school. He stated, “During this Jubilee of Hope, we thought it important to pray and learn about the different realities their fellow students face in Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America.”
Alixandra Holdren, the Director of the Missionary Childhood Association, highlighted that their mission revolves around “children helping children.” This principle teaches kids that through prayer and support, they can genuinely impact each other’s lives.
