Join UNMC Student Regent Brock Calamari for an Insightful Discussion on the Dr. Gold Podcast

The University of Nebraska System has just dropped a new episode of the “Heart to Heart” podcast. Hosted by President Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, this series dives into conversations with various leaders, educators, and alumni to highlight the impactful work of the University.

In this episode, President Gold chats with Brock Calamari, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). Originally from Illinois, Brock studied forensic biology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before transitioning to medicine.

Brock has been actively involved in student governance at UNMC as a college of medicine senator and now serves as student body president and one of NU’s student regents. He works on state legislation and volunteers during senate events to ensure student voices are heard both on campus and at the state level.

His passion for medicine ignited when he shadowed at a coroner’s office, seeing firsthand how crucial this field is to public health. Brock explains, “Seeing it in real life opened my eyes to its importance.”

As student body president, he embraces the intersection of medicine, policy, and advocacy. This role allows him to connect with policymakers and understand the impacts of their decisions on healthcare. “It’s incredible to see the behind-the-scenes of healthcare,” Brock says. “We engage with our communities and help politicians grasp how their choices affect people’s health.”

His experiences have strengthened his belief in the power of collaboration. Brock notes, “Leadership is about showing up and uniting to tackle problems we can solve together.”

Many of his peers seek advice on leadership. He reassures them, “It’s easier than you think. Just show an interest and be open about what matters to you.”

Dr. Gold praised Brock for his contributions and his advocacy in healthcare and education, expressing appreciation for the strong example he sets for others.

As part of an initiative to share stories and insights, new episodes of “Heart to Heart” are released monthly on platforms like SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify.

With the increasing importance of student voices in policy, Brock’s perspective resonates. According to a recent survey from the National Student Leadership Development, 74% of students believe they can influence decisions that affect their education. This statistic highlights the significant role young leaders play in shaping the future.
