Severnini studies the connections between energy, the environment, and health economics. His research focuses on climate change, how energy transitions occur, and the effects of pollution and electrification on communities. He also looks at how climate change impacts air quality, power generation, and the spread of diseases.

“We often enjoy the benefits of activities that produce pollution,” Severnini explained. “I want to understand the true economic costs of pollution, especially concerning human health. My goal is to find ways to reduce pollution while maintaining the benefits we currently receive.”

His interest in joining the Schiller Institute stems from its commitment to research for the greater good. He appreciates the collaboration among faculty members and other university researchers. “The institute’s focus on health, energy, and the environment aligns perfectly with my work,” he said. During his visit, he was impressed by the welcoming and cooperative atmosphere.

Laura J. Steinberg, the Executive Director of the Schiller Institute, refers to Severnini as a “world-class economist.” She believes he will be a significant asset to their team. “His work on decarbonization and the economic impact of climate-related health risks supports our mission to address vital societal issues in energy, environment, and health,” she noted. “Edson has a talent for engaging others and fostering collaboration.”
