New Delhi is buzzing as the two-day Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025 kicks off. This event highlights India’s growing role in the global rice industry. Delegates from over 80 countries, including major rice importers and exporters, have gathered to discuss this vital sector.
Hosted by the Indian Rice Exporters’ Federation (IREF), the conference aims to create a platform for shaping the future of rice trade. It focuses on collaborating with farmers, exporters, and innovators to boost the Indian economy while promoting sustainable farming practices.
Prem Garg, the National President of IREF, opened the event, emphasizing ambitious goals. “We aim to tap into Rs 1.80 lakh crore in new markets currently dominated by competitors,” he said, noting the identification of contracts worth Rs 25,000 crore. Garg underscored the vision: making Indian rice not only the most traded but also the most trusted globally.
Myanmar’s Deputy Minister for Commerce, U Minn Minn, praised the historical and cultural ties between India and Myanmar through rice cultivation. He urged nations to work together amid climate challenges and food security issues. “No nation can achieve food security alone. Cooperation with India will enhance regional food security,” he said.
A standout moment at BIRC 2025 will be the recognition of 17 Indian farmers by international buyers. These farmers, representing various states such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Kerala, have made notable contributions to quality and innovation in rice farming. They cultivate unique varieties, including Govindobhog and Chak-Hao, which highlight India’s agricultural diversity.
This year, the conference will host thematic sessions and trade discussions aimed at expanding India’s rice export footprint and supporting global food security initiatives. The collaboration and insights gained here could shape the future of rice trade for years to come.
