Join Us at the Troy University & ACOM Rural Health Rheumatology Conference: Spotlight on Lupus Care

Troy University’s Wiregrass Alabama Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is teaming up with the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) to host a specialized conference that focuses on improving care for lupus in rural areas.

This event will be held on July 18, starting at noon in the Team Based Learning Center at ACOM. It’s designed for healthcare providers who work in rural settings, where access to rheumatology care can be tough to find.

Dr. Ariail G. Schmitz, DO, will lead the conference. She’s a rheumatologist at Southeast Health Medical Center and an ACOM graduate. Dr. Schmitz specializes in autoimmune diseases, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Her journey as an ACOM alumna gives her a unique insight into the challenges healthcare professionals face in rural communities.

Rural healthcare often has gaps, especially for conditions like lupus, which impacts millions. This conference aims to improve healthcare providers’ understanding and knowledge of lupus, particularly in remote areas where patients struggle to gain specialized care.

Interestingly, a recent study from the Lupus Foundation of America highlighted that timely diagnosis and effective treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes. This fits perfectly with the conference’s goal to promote awareness and education around lupus treatment, consistent with the efforts of the American College of Rheumatology.

Providers can attend either in person or virtually, making it convenient for many to join. The conference also offers Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits, and lunch will be provided for attendees.

This initiative showcases Troy University’s dedication to tackling healthcare disparities in rural Alabama. Through the Wiregrass AHEC, they focus on training and keeping healthcare professionals in the region, aiming to enhance care quality for underserved populations.
