Join Us at Virginia Tech’s Women in Data Science Event in Blacksburg: Celebrate and Empower Female Innovators on February 18-19!

The field of data science is booming, and Virginia Tech is shining a light on women in this area with the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Blacksburg event on February 18-19.

This free event invites anyone interested in data science. Just a quick note: registration ends on February 14, so make sure to sign up!

WiDS Blacksburg is part of the larger WiDS Worldwide initiative, which aims to empower women in data science. The goal is to boost women’s representation in the field to 30% by 2030. Right now, women make up less than 20% of data science students and fewer than 10% of decision-makers.

The event kicks off on February 18 with a networking mixer from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Data and Decision Sciences Building. It’s a fantastic chance to meet fellow students, faculty, and professionals interested in data science.

On February 19, attendees can look forward to an exciting agenda from 5 to 8:45 p.m. in the 220 Classroom Building. There will be keynote speeches, an expert panel focused on mentoring, and a student poster session.

Neeta Eapen, a faculty member at Radford University, will give the opening keynote. She has extensive experience in areas like machine learning and optimization challenges. Bonnie Ghosh-Dastidar, the 2024 president of the American Statistical Association and a senior statistician at RAND, will close the conference, sharing insights on how statistics and data science can impact health policy.
