Holiday Food and Book Drive on December 20
Michigan City – The Michigan City High School Student Council is organizing a special drive-through food drive. Students and staff from Michigan City Area Schools want everyone in the community to join in.
This event will collect non-perishable food items at The Salvation Army of Michigan City (1201 Franklin Street) on December 20 from 9:00 am to noon. All donated food will support The Salvation Army’s food pantry.
Last year, this food drive collected over five tons of goods. This year, organizers ask for personal hygiene items and baby supplies, which are urgently needed. To manage the large volume of donations, the venue has moved to The Salvation Army for easier sorting.
During the drive-through event, people can enter from Washington Street to make donations. Volunteers will help collect items from vehicles. Monetary donations for The Salvation Army are also welcome.
“Our community really steps up to help each other, especially when it matters most,” said MCHS Student Council President Makenna Nowatzke. “We’re proud to continue this tradition of giving back.”
The drive also includes a fun competition among local schools. Each school will collect food, and the one with the most, adjusted for size, will win a traveling trophy to display for a year. Some schools are already preparing for this friendly contest.
In addition to food, the MCHS National Honor Society is hosting “Operation Bookworm,” collecting new or gently used books for children and teens. The community can drop off books at The Salvation Army on December 20 as well. These books will be distributed during the holiday season.
This initiative not only highlights the spirit of giving but also addresses pressing needs in the community. According to a recent survey by Feeding America, the number of people struggling with hunger has grown significantly since the pandemic. Community-driven efforts like this food and book drive offer hope and support.
Local reactions on social media have shown strong enthusiasm. Many residents are sharing how they plan to participate, with some even starting donation drives in their neighborhoods. Such teamwork can have a big impact on the lives of families in need.
Through events like these, Michigan City showcases its commitment to community service, reminding us all of the importance of sharing during the holiday season.
