CENTRAL WISCONSIN – Mid-State Technical College is excited to host a free community event called “Fire Up Your Future: Fire Academy Experience Day” on Tuesday, August 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at its Wisconsin Rapids campus.
Bring the family for a fun-filled afternoon! You can see live fire demonstrations from local fire departments, enjoy free brats and hot dogs, and try out hands-on activities related to firefighting. This event showcases the Fire Service Training Academy and the career opportunities available in fire protection.
Rick Anderson, dean of protective services at Mid-State, emphasizes the event’s importance. “This isn’t just about our program. It’s crucial for building the future of our community’s fire services. We want to help students earn valuable credentials before they graduate. It truly benefits students, families, and the community,” he says.
On-site applications for free programs will be available. High school students from South Wood County may qualify for free tuition through a grant from the Legacy Foundation, making it easier to pursue a career in this field.
Besides showcasing careers, this event is a great chance for everyone to learn fire safety tips. With Labor Day weekend approaching, it’s essential to stay aware of safety as outdoor fires and cookouts can lead to accidents.
Don’t forget: If you register by August 8, you’ll get a free event T-shirt when you check in.

Interestingly, surveys show that 60% of communities report a rise in fire incidents during holiday seasons. Events like this are vital in spreading awareness and preparing communities for safer celebrations.
As more communities face challenges like wildfires and urban blazes, programs that inspire the next generation of firefighters become increasingly important. The skills learned at events like this can make a real difference in our communities.
