On February 11, residents of Meridian can join a valuable Healthy Heart Awareness Lunch & Learn at NorthPark Church. This free event starts at noon and aims to educate the community about heart health. Attendees must RSVP by February 9.
Dr. Eesha Khan, a well-respected cardiologist, will lead the discussion. She will focus on cardiovascular diseases, including heart disease and strokes, which are the leading causes of death in Mississippi. Dr. Khan will explain how coronary artery disease impacts the heart and why it’s crucial to recognize symptoms early to save lives.
Interestingly, heart disease symptoms can vary between genders. Men often experience chest pain, while women may have less obvious indicators, like shortness of breath, nausea, or fatigue. These subtle signs are frequently ignored or misunderstood, making early detection even more vital.
Beverly Knox, President of the Community Health Improvement Network (CHIN), highlighted the significance of such community events. “Heart disease affects families throughout our area. Too often, the warning signs go unnoticed. This Lunch & Learn allows us to gain a better understanding of heart health and learn how to prevent issues,” she stated.
This initiative is part of CHIN’s commitment to improve health awareness and access to preventative care, particularly for underserved communities. Since 2016, CHIN has partnered with healthcare providers and local organizations to address pressing health challenges revealed through community assessments. In fact, a recent study showed that access to education on heart health can significantly lower risks in at-risk populations.
As heart health remains a crucial topic, events like this help bridge the gap in knowledge and encourage proactive health measures. By coming together, communities can foster a better understanding of heart disease and take steps toward a healthier future.
