Princeton University will hold a Veterans Day observance on Tuesday, November 11, at 9 a.m. in the Chapel. This event is free and open to everyone.
Several speakers will share their thoughts, including Princeton Mayor Mark Freda and Roger Williams from The Spirit of Princeton. University Veteran Coordinator Mohamed Siam and Matt Brzycki from Campus Recreation will also speak.
The ceremony features an invocation by Dr. Vineet Chander, an assistant dean of religious life. Kenneth Grayson will sing the national anthem along with “America the Beautiful.” Dr. Mary Rorro, a psychiatrist with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, will perform an original song, and Nick Lorenzen from the Class of 2027 will play taps.
Rebecca Galin, a senior Jewish educator at Princeton Hillel, will give the closing benediction.
This observance is sponsored by various university departments and groups, including the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, the Office of Religious Life, and the Military and Service Veterans Resource Group.
In the context of Veterans Day, it’s worth noting that only 7% of Americans serve in the military today, compared to about 12% during past conflicts like Vietnam. This change impacts how we view and honor veterans. Social media platforms are buzzing around this holiday as many share stories and experiences, creating a broader conversation about the sacrifices made by service members.
As we remember those who served, it’s essential to reflect on the current state of veteran support in our communities. Programs continue to evolve, with mental health resources being a significant focus.
