Join Us for a Weekend of Innovation: Bioinspired Learning at Lake Tahoe University

At the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe, students from different fields came together for the new Bioinspired Innovation Course. This one-credit weekend class is all about how lab ideas can turn into real-life applications.

“I realized just how diverse these companies can be,” said Morgan Yeager, a chemistry graduate student. “Talking with industry professionals opened my eyes to the endless possibilities out there.”

These one-credit courses at Lake Tahoe offer an amazing chance for hands-on learning. Over a weekend, students dive deep into a subject, interact with peers and professors, all while surrounded by the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains.

Students across various disciplines—science, arts, business, and more—discovered how nature’s designs can inspire medical advancements. They heard from innovators who transformed their “aha moments” into breakthroughs, like life-saving treatments for HIV.

Industry leaders, including Mick Hitchcock, interim CEO of Biomea Fusion, and pharmaceutical entrepreneur Scott Chadwick, shared a key takeaway: science thrives on collaboration. Each emphasized their achievements were only possible through teamwork. “Science is rarely a solo venture,” Hitchcock noted. “It’s about building trust and sharing ideas.”

These leaders view their involvement as an investment in future innovation. They believe that true progress stems from a curious and collaborative community. After the lectures, many students left with a fresh understanding of success.

“Success can look different,” Yeager said. “You can be a CEO, or you can be a lab chemist. There are so many pathways. It’s uplifting to know that success could be just around the corner.”

Professor Christopher Jeffrey aimed to create a new type of learning environment that focuses on experience and connections. He hopes to make this course a lasting part of the curriculum. “I saw greater engagement than in traditional classes,” he stated. “I plan to expand this model to other areas of innovation.”

The Bioinspired Innovation Course was more than just science; it encouraged students to build community, gain perspective, and feel empowered to envision the future.

“When universities team up with industry, it gives students and faculty direct insight into real-world innovation,” said Douglas Boyle, Interim Vice Provost. “Programs like this illustrate our commitment to turning ideas into impactful outcomes.”

As society faces rapid changes and challenges, innovative educational models like this become crucial. Research shows that interdisciplinary collaborations can lead to more effective problem-solving in various fields. A survey by the National Science Foundation indicates that students engaged in such programs report higher career satisfaction and skill development.
