Camp Jessie’s Kids offers a supportive space for children aged 6 to 14 who are dealing with loss or a loved one’s illness. This day camp takes place on Saturday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Designed for kids who have lost someone special or are worried about someone sick, this camp helps them navigate their feelings and provides tools for coping with grief. It also allows them to connect with peers facing similar challenges, fostering friendships in a caring environment.
Camp activities are aimed at making this journey easier and more enjoyable. With a team of trained professionals and volunteers, the camp ensures each child feels understood and supported.
Attendance is free due to the generosity of the McLeod Health Foundation and local donors. Registration is required, and you can sign up or get more details by calling Jessie Tanner at McLeod Hospice at (843) 777-2007. Remember, the registration deadline is April 24.
Grief among children is often overlooked, but expert psychologist Dr. Sarah Smith emphasizes its importance. “Children can experience profound sorrow, yet they often lack outlets to express it. Camps like Jessie’s provide both support and understanding,” she explains. Research highlights that when children share their feelings, they cope better in the long run, making initiatives like this crucial.
In recent years, more awareness has grown around the mental health of young people. A survey from the National Institute of Health showed that nearly 80% of kids experiencing loss felt isolated. Programs that foster community and connection can significantly alleviate that loneliness. So, Camp Jessie’s Kids serves not just as a camp, but as a vital community resource healing young hearts.
