Join Us for Drive-Thru Food Distributions in Kīhei: Maui Food Bank Events on Nov. 19, Dec. 3 & Dec. 17!

The Maui Food Bank is stepping up to help residents hit hard by a recent government shutdown. They’re hosting three drive-thru food distribution events aimed at those affected, including military families and folks facing disruptions in benefits like SNAP or WIC.

These events will take place on November 19, December 3, and December 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The location is the PFC Anthony T. Kahoohanohano Armory on Maui Veterans Highway in Kīhei. It’s first-come, first-served, so it’s best to arrive early for a greater chance of getting food.

To participate, individuals need to register online first at Maui Food Bank’s enrollment page. Once registered, there’s no need to sign up again; keep the Client ID number for check-in. For those who can’t enroll online, there’s a paper check-in option available.

Organizations picking up for multiple households should reach out to Kawehi at Maui Food Bank to set a specific time for pickup by emailing kawehi@mauifoodbank.org or calling 808-463-2176.

The Food Bank team greatly appreciates the volunteers and community partners making this initiative possible. Special thanks go out to the Hawaiʻi Army and Air National Guard, along with the US Space Force, for their contributions during these important distributions.

This type of community support isn’t new. The response to food insecurity often brings people together, especially in times of crisis. In recent months, similar trends have emerged across the U.S. As reported by the Food Research & Action Center, food insecurity levels spiked during the pandemic, affecting millions. But thanks to local efforts like these, many communities are fighting back.

With the struggles brought on by the shutdown, these food distribution events highlight the importance of community resilience and support. Let’s hope for more initiatives like this in the future.
