Flint, Michigan: A Focus on Community Health
For years, Hamilton Community Health Network has made it a priority to provide affordable healthcare in Flint. Their work has become essential for a community striving for better health.
Every August, Hamilton joins the nation in celebrating National Health Center Week. This year, from August 4-8, they’ll host free, family-friendly events, complete with resources, food, and giveaways.
Clarence Pierce, CEO of Hamilton, emphasizes the significance of this celebration. “This year’s theme is ‘America’s health centers celebrating 60 years of improving our nation’s health,’” he shares. “We’re honoring health centers and their roles in providing accessible care for everyone, no matter their income.”
Founded in 1982, Hamilton arose from the community’s need for healthcare, particularly for those who struggle to access it. Pierce explains, “We focus on those who often cannot get quality care. We offer primary care, dental services, vision clinics, two in-house pharmacies, and specialty care. We even have a partnership with the University of Michigan to provide free monthly mammograms.”
The celebrations aim to not only highlight these services but also to promote health awareness. “Good health is the foundation for everything else in life,” Pierce says.
One of the kick-off events, Hope & Health Day, will occur on August 4. It’s dedicated to supporting those without homes or facing housing instability. “We’ll have free lunches, hygiene kits, health screenings, and live music,” says Pierce. This event represents a growing trend in healthcare, where organizations are shifting to meet not only physical but also social needs.
On August 6, the Healthy Harvest Day will focus on nutrition. “We’ll hand out farm-fresh fruits and vegetables,” Pierce explains. Access to nutritious food can be a challenge in underserved areas, where residents often resort to options high in sugar and sodium.
The highlight of the week is Family Fun Day on August 8. This festive event includes games, entertainment, and food. “More community residents are joining us every year. It’s a joyful celebration,” he notes. They’ll also have giveaways, including bikes and gift cards.
Experts in healthcare say that such events are vital for community health. According to a recent report, 37% of Americans cite access to healthcare as a significant concern, highlighting the importance of local efforts like those at Hamilton.
As National Health Center Week approaches, Hamilton Community Health Network invites everyone to join in celebrating health and wellness. Together, they continue to make a difference in Flint and the surrounding areas.
