CHARLEMONT — Snow is piling up and excitement is building for the United Way’s 16th annual Ski United fundraiser. With 160 skiers signed up as of Monday, this year is shaping up to be special, according to Holly Martineau, development director for United Way of Franklin & Hampshire Region.
Scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5, at Berkshire East Mountain Resort, the event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by an après-ski dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Funds raised will focus on pressing issues like food insecurity and youth mental health. “Every dollar will go where it’s needed most,” Martineau explained.
This initiative reflects United Way’s 2025-2026 goals, which aim to improve mental and physical health across the region. They are teaming up with local organizations like The Brick House Community Resource Center and the Amherst Survival Center.
While they haven’t set a specific financial target, the goal is to beat last year’s total of $49,371, which resulted in nearly $40,000 for the organization after expenses. “Each year, we aim to do better,” Martineau said. “Our volunteers are the driving force behind this effort.”
Since its inception in 2010, Ski United has raised over $250,000. Founder Steve Prothers wanted to combine his love for skiing with a commitment to the community. The event is crucial; according to Executive Director Geoff Naunheim, it supports a significant part of their budget.
A ski pass costs $150, while companies can register groups starting at $250. Each pass includes a lift ticket, a T-shirt, meals, and participation in a slalom race.
For those who don’t ski, there’s still a way to join in the fun. A $40 ticket grants access to the dinner, and there’s an online auction with over 125 items. As of now, it has already raised over $8,300, with hopes to surpass the $13,000 goal by closing on Feb. 9.
Martineau is optimistic about a great turnout and beautiful weather. “It’s not just about skiing. People come together to support a cause,” she said. “Everything raised stays in Franklin and Hampshire counties.”
