Join Us for the 2025 Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 10th: Support the Hingham Food Pantry!

May 6, 2025 by Susan Kiernan

On the second Saturday in May, letter carriers nationwide will collect non-perishable food donations to support local food pantries. Since its start in 1993, the Help Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers, has become the largest one-day food drive in the U.S. This initiative plays a vital role in filling pantry shelves in communities across the country.

In Hingham, local letter carriers have supported the Hingham Food Pantry since the drive began. Together with the community’s generosity, they have brought in over 3,800 pounds of food each year. This year, the collections will aid 160 local families that the pantry helps. Last week alone, 68 families visited the pantry or received deliveries, benefiting from over 5,000 pounds of canned goods, dairy, bakery items, meat, produce, and essential supplies.

As the economy changes, the Hingham Food Pantry is seeing new faces among those in need. Many families are facing hardships and require assistance, making community support more crucial than ever. Since opening in 1991, the pantry has always thrived on strong neighborhood support. Hingham truly embodies the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors.

On Saturday, May 10, please remember to leave unopened, unexpired non-perishable food by your mailbox. Some of the most needed items include canned tuna, peanut butter, coffee, white rice, cookies, and beef stew.

If you need assistance or want to learn more about the Hingham Food Pantry, call 781-740-8180 or email hinghamfood@gmail.com. Monetary donations are also welcome at Hingham Food Pantry, 685 Main Street. Together, we can make a difference.

Interestingly, a recent survey by Feeding America found that nearly 54% of people experiencing food insecurity are reluctant to seek help. This highlights the importance of community outreach and making services accessible. Your contribution can help change this statistic, ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry.
