Join Us for the Aug. 11 Military Food Share: Supporting Our Heroes Together!

Suzanne Rensel, an environmental education expert from the DCNR, recently shared insights about bats at a Patton Garden Club meeting. She highlighted their vital role in maintaining balance in ecosystems. Unfortunately, bat populations are declining, prompting various initiatives aimed at their recovery.

The Duncansville VFW Auxiliary 8724 is hosting a Military Food Share on Monday, August 11, starting at 11 a.m. This program is for active military members, veterans, and their families living in Blair County. Attendees will need to bring military identification or a photo ID. Food distribution occurs every second Monday of the month, supported by dedicated volunteers and local businesses.

The Historical Society has planned a bus tour on September 7 at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., exploring three significant neighborhoods in Altoona: Columbia Park, Mansion Park, and the Knickerbocker Development. Tour attendees will visit historic homes, schools, and sites related to local culture. Each ticket costs $35 and includes a brochure and a new booklet sharing the rich history of the Knickerbocker Development.

A ballroom dance will take place on Sunday, August 17, at Lambert Hall, Bellefonte from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10, and guests are encouraged to bring a snack to share.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is holding a unique raffle. For $50, participants could win a three-year lease on a 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid or $10,000 in cash. Only 500 tickets are available, adding to the excitement of this fundraising event, which supports art exhibitions and educational programs in the region.

On September 6, the Bedford County Historical Society will honor Gillian Leach at its annual History Banquet. Tickets are priced at $20.

Boy Scouts Troop 19 will hold a reunion on August 16 at 3 p.m. at the Serena House. Everyone is welcome, and food will be provided. Please RSVP to help with arrangements.

The Indiana Ballroom Dance Club will celebrate the start of a new season with a dance on September 5 at the Elks Lodge. Music will be provided by Zupe, and an optional dinner buffet will be available. RSVPs are needed by August 25.

From bats to ballroom dancing, local events offer something for everyone. Whether supporting our veterans or enjoying the arts, community participation strengthens connections and enriches our lives.
