Binhi at Ani is bringing back its Bayanihan Food Distribution program to Lahaina on November 15. This initiative started during the pandemic to help those in need.
“Last year, we received a great response on the west side,” said Arnel Alvarez, president of Binhi at Ani. “We decided to return to Lahaina to assist those who need it most.”
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at Lahaina Intermediate School. It will run until they run out of food boxes, hot meals, and fresh groceries. Each vehicle can take one box.
To help with traffic, cars should drive up Lahainaluna Road. Volunteers will guide drivers to make right turns into the school.
Maui Food Bank partners with Binhi at Ani for this program. Recently, the Maui Lions Club donated $10,000 to help buy fresh produce for the event.
The Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center also welcomes donations of cash, canned goods, and fresh fruits from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Volunteers are needed on November 13 and 14 at the Community Center to prepare food boxes. More volunteers are also welcome for the distribution event on November 15.
Recent studies indicate that food insecurity has surged in the U.S. due to rising costs. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of households faced food shortages last year. Programs like Bayanihan play a vital role in alleviating this issue, especially for those affected by local challenges, such as wildfires in the area.
