PARKERSBURG — The Chick Crites Food Drive is back! Join us this Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Parkersburg News and Sentinel’s parking lot, located at 519 Juliana St. This event marks its sixth annual gathering, and your donations will help local veterans and their families.
This food drive supports the DAV Chapter 32 food pantry and Old Man Rivers, splitting donations equally between the two. It honors Carl “Chick” Crites, a Marine Corps veteran who dedicated his life to aiding fellow veterans. He passed away in 2020, but his legacy lives on.
Bernie Lyons, a founder of the Marine Corps Veteran Association’s Parkersburg branch, shared, “This food drive is vital. The need in our community has surged this year.” Every donation, whether it’s canned goods, hygiene items, or cash, stays local to support those in need. Gary Bradley, commander of DAV Chapter 32, emphasized, “No veteran in Wood County or the surrounding counties should go hungry.”
New statistics show a significant increase in food insecurity across the nation, particularly affecting military families. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that 1 in 4 military families face food insecurity, highlighting the importance of events like this.
Community response has been strong, and your involvement matters. As Bradley pointed out, supporting this drive is a way to show gratitude to those who served. “Let’s come together to ensure they know they are not forgotten,” he said.
So, if you can, stop by this Saturday and contribute. Every little bit helps and shows our veterans they have our support.
