The Winston-Salem State University women’s basketball team is set to start 2026 with a game against Virginia University of Lynchburg on January 2 at 5:30 p.m. The match will take place at the C.E. Gaines Center.

This will be the second time these teams face off. Last year, the Rams won decisively, defeating the Dragons 71-44.

A new chapter unfolds for the Rams this season with Coach Tierra Terry at the helm. She is not just a coach but also a former player and a graduate of WSSU. In the off-season, she brought on Jessica Freeman and Dylan Anderson to strengthen her coaching staff.

The Rams look to build on their strengths with seven returning players, including sophomore Alana Biosse and juniors Zion Dixon and Kierran Walker. There are also nine newcomers joining the team, such as freshman TaNiya Simms and senior Makayla Waleed.

During the preseason, the Lady Rams were predicted to finish seventh in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) poll, while Jakaiya Mack earned a spot on the preseason team.

Several players have already stood out early in the season. Ah’Kiyah Pye earned CIAA Rookie of the Week honors three times, and Makayla Waleed was recognized as CIAA Defensive Player of the Week.

In their last game, the Rams dominated the University of Mount Olive, securing an 86-50 victory. Maia Charles led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing the team’s potential.

As for their opponents, Virginia University of Lynchburg is struggling this season, with a record of 0-7. DaNiya Warren McClure is the leading scorer for the Dragons, averaging 12.5 points per game.

Looking ahead, the Rams will return to conference play, facing Bluefield State University on January 7 at 5:30 p.m., again at the C.E. Gaines Center.

Engaging with the players and new coaching staff brings a fresh dynamic to the team. Fans and analysts are eager to see how these changes will impact their performance in the season ahead.
