SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Morningside University is thrilled to host 100 high school students on Tuesday, February 4, for the sixth Science and Mathematics Academic Reasoning Tournament, or SMART. This event celebrates students’ talents in math, biology, chemistry, and physics and encourages their interest in STEM fields.
Students from nine local high schools will enjoy a full day of activities. They’ll take part in competitive exams, attend STEM sessions, and have the chance to chat with current Morningside students during a Q&A panel. The day will wrap up with an awards ceremony to honor their efforts.
Dr. Brian McFarland, Dean of Arts and Sciences, shared his excitement: “Our students and faculty really love being a part of this. They volunteer to help with everything, from organizing to proctoring exams. Their enthusiasm makes the event special.”
Here are some key activities planned for the day:
- Competitive Exams (9:30 a.m., Walker Science Center): Students will tackle two 45-minute exams focusing on math, science, chemistry, or physics. Calculators are not allowed.
- Quiz Bowl (1 p.m., WSC): Teams of four will compete in a fun quiz format. Schools can enter multiple teams.
- STEM Activity Sessions: After the competitions, students will engage in hands-on STEM activities led by Morningside faculty.
- Awards Ceremony (3:15 p.m., Eppley Auditorium): The top prize includes a $5,000 scholarship to Morningside University.
Dr. McFarland hopes students will enjoy themselves and aim for the scholarship. “It’s a great opportunity to win something significant,” he said.
The SMART Competition has grown a lot since starting with 55 students in 2019. Now, nearly 100 participants are expected, showing just how popular the event has become.
Morningside University is proud to provide a welcoming space for young learners to dive into STEM fields, connect with like-minded peers, and experience college life. We can’t wait to celebrate these future innovators!
