Poetry and basketball are joining forces at Oakland University! On April 14, 2026, the campus will host the Maurice Brown Memorial Poetry Reading featuring poet Ross Gay. This event celebrates both the art of poetry and the thrill of basketball, a fantastic way to wrap up National Poetry Month and the excitement of March Madness.
Starting at 6 p.m. at the OU Recreation Center basketball courts, the event is free for everyone. Ross Gay will share poems and essays that reflect his love for basketball, including “Be Holding,” which explores a famous image of NBA legend Julius Erving’s incredible mid-air scoop in the 1980 finals. Attendees will even get to see a clip of that unforgettable moment during the reading.
Dr. Katie Hartsock, an associate professor in English, is excited about this unique blend of art and sport. She noted, “Our university has talented writers and passionate basketball fans. I hope they can come together at this event.”
Ross Gay is an acclaimed author known for his poignant reflections on American life. He has written four poetry collections, including “Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude,” which won multiple awards.
