The Turkish government is ramping up its efforts to address pressing environmental issues as it prepares for the COP31 Summit in November 2026. From May 9 to 11, the Directorate of Communications will host a media tour focused on climate and environmental initiatives. This tour, following an earlier one in March, will take journalists to Hatay and İstanbul.
Seventeen media representatives from eleven countries, including the UK, South Korea, and Spain, will explore Turkey’s strategies to combat climate change and promote sustainability. The aim is to shed light on Turkey’s environmental policies and showcase innovations in sustainable technology.
Participants will kick off their journey with a field visit in Hatay as part of the “Türkiye’s Road to COP31: Resilient Cities Programme.” They’ll meet with Murat Kurum, Turkey’s Minister of Environment and COP31 President-Designate, who will provide insights into the summit’s goals focused on dialogue and global collaboration for a more equitable future.
The final day features a visit to the İstanbul Indoor Vertical Farming R&D Center, noted for being the second-deepest vertical farming facility in the world. Here, participants will learn about the role of technology in sustainable agriculture. They will also engage with an environmental awareness initiative aimed at educating young people about sustainability.
To further strengthen media understanding, four additional tours are planned before the summit. This initiative highlights Turkey’s commitment to climate action, confirming its stance as a proactive player in global environmental conversations.
According to a recent survey by the Global Climate Change Initiative, 75% of citizens believe that media coverage of environmental issues shapes public perception and policy. This underscores the importance of the upcoming media tours in influencing international discourse on climate action.
